Introduction
Greenpeace
is a non-governmental environmental organization with offices in over forty
countries and with an international coordinating body in Amsterdam, the
Netherlands.
Greenpeace
states its goal is to "ensure the ability of the Earth to nurture life in
all its diversity"and focuses its campaigning on worldwide issues such as
global warming, deforestation, overfishing, commercial whaling, genetic
engineering, and anti-nuclear issues.
History
The
environmental movement was born in 1971 when a group of Canadian antinuclear
activists, some Quakers and conscientious objectors Americans who had fled to
Canada to avoid participating in the Vietnam War, formed a small organization
called “Do not make a wave Committee.”
Protesting
against U.S. nuclear tests carried out in the archipelago of Amchitka (Alaska),
northern Canada.
The nuclear
test was conducted, but the action complaint led to demonstrations occurs for
day’s dozens of people on the border between Canada and the United States.
